Book Review: One Big Thing, by Phil Cooke

I review for BookSneeze® Every once in a while on this blog I review a book with BookSneeze®. Because y'all know how much I love to write about books.

(If you are a blogger and interested in how you can get free books to review, click here for more info.)

I started back in January by reviewing A Year With Jesus, and then shared some thoughts on I Am a Follower in July.

Today I'm talking about One Big Thing: Discovering What You Were Born To Do by Phil Cooke.

I think the best way to sum up my feelings on this book is this:
I wanted to like it more than I actually did.

It's a great concept: figuring out what you were meant to do and running with it. The style of the book is conversational and mostly a pleasant read. (Although, the author did sound a wee bit condescending in a few spots.) Generally, however, a good idea, an easy read, and an author who seems like the kind of person you could imagine yourself having coffee with and discussing deep thoughts.

Yet, I found myself wishing the book emphasized passion a little more and standing out a little less. It seemed to skew toward making it into a competition: not just finding your bliss, but marketing it better than anyone else.

I don't know; maybe it's just me, because I'm not a very confrontational or competitive person, but I found this a bit too focused on applying your one big thing to a career—getting noticed and getting ahead—and downplaying personal fulfillment.

Have any of you read One Big Thing? Thoughts?

Thanks for reading and have a blessed day.

Note: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze® book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

  1. That is a great opportunity to read a new book. Probably something you wouldn't typically buy. I haven't read this title before. Hope you find a better book next time :)

    1. Thanks. It is a pretty cool system. There are a lot more options for e-readers, but they will send print books as well, which is what I request. I have a new one on the way already!

  2. Stopping by from the HHH. :) I've tried booksneexe a few times, but wasn't excited about the books I got from them. Isn't it hard to *not* finish a book, even when you really don't like it? Beautiful family!

    1. Thanks for stopping by. I know; there are very few books I haven't been able to finish. I actually read this one twice! I guess I was really hoping to have something better to say about it, LOL.
