10 Favorite Authors for Beginning Readers

Following are ten of our absolute favorite children's book authors. We own many books by these folks, and have taken countless others out of the library. Some are of the board book variety, others would be considered early chapter books, and some fall in between. I love watching the younger Agents get totally "into" the same books their older siblings loved at the same ages. (And, I get to read them all again, too!)

1. Margaret and H.A. Rey Who doesn't love that curious little monkey and his neurotic yellow-loving pal?

2. Sandra Bonyton We especially love Pajama Time!, Belly Button Book!, and Moo, Baa, La La La!

3. Ian Falconer Olivia is definitely my preferred cartoon pig. I especially love Olivia Goes to Venice.

4. Dr. Seuss Classics that should be in everyone's library.

5. David A. Adler Writes the Young Cam Jansen series as well as numerous other fiction and nonfiction books.

6. Cynthia Rylant Meet Poppleton, Mr. Putter, Tabby, Henry, Mudge, Annie, Snowball, and tons of other fun characters you will want to read about again and again.

7. Shel Silverstein Wonderful introduction to poetry with bonus silliness.

8. Mo Willems If you are not familiar with the antics of Gerald and Piggie, you are seriously missing out.

9. Marc Brown The larger "adventure book" series books are ideal for early readers.

10. DK Publishing Star Wars leveled readers Okay, kind of cheating because it's not really one author. But . . . these books are awesome. (And I needed something for #10!)
